Jane Winters: From “digital dark age” to “an age of historical abundance”? The Past, Present and Future of Born-Digital Cultural Heritage

This lecture will consider the challenges associated with the identification, capture, archiving and preservation of the myriad forms of digital cultural heritage created by individuals, communities, institutions and organisations every day. It will discuss digital records ranging from the archives of the web and social media to information held on company document servers and personal hard drives, exploring their value for histories of the late 20th and early 21st century. The lecture will address questions of abundance and scarcity, vulnerability and resilience, and conclude with some reflections on the digital infrastructures that mediate access to both digital and analogue records.
