Zusammenfassung

The Digital History Advanced Research Projects Accelerator project (DHARPA) (https://dharpa.org/) at the Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C2DH, University of Luxembourg) proposes a workshop to explore the role of and reflection on research processes in digital humanities, introducing participants to the project’s data orchestration software, kiara (https://github.com/DHARPA-Project).Participants will share how they use digital tools, how the research process itself contributes to analytical outcomes, and how this might fruitfully contribute to historical research and scholarship.

Technische Voraussetzungen

The workshop itself will only require internet access and projector, but we ask that participants download and install kiara  in advance, as per the instructions here: https://dharpa.org/kiara.documentation/latest/usage/getting_started/ Participants only need to follow instructions in the ‘Setting up Kiara’ section, and do not need to go further than this, as elements of this will be covered in the worksop itself.

There will be time after the first hour of the session to address any technical problems with installation, should this be necessary.

Zielgruppe

We invite participants with basic to advanced experience with data management and digital tools. Knowledge of Python and use of Jupyter notebooks would be beneficial, but not essential. Though a section of the workshop will offer opportunities to work with network analysis experiments, participants from a wider range of digital and methodological approaches are encouraged.

Info-/ Ankündigungstext

This workshop, hosted by The Digital History Advanced Research Projects Accelerator project (DHARPA) from the C2DH, University of Luxembourg, will explore the role of and reflection on research processes in digital humanities, introducing participants to the project’s data orchestration software, kiara (https://github.com/DHARPA-Project). This new tool documents and encourages users to critically reflect on the process and use of DH tools, opening up the ‘black box’ of digital research, and making digital research more transparent and open to commentary, replicability, and criticism. kiara acts as a ‘wrapper’ to the digital research process, tracking and documenting the steps and changes to the data, and producing a veritable map of the journey that can be reflected upon and shared.

In this workshop, participants will use kiara within Jupyter Notebooks, experimenting with network analysis tools. Participants will use these outputs to reflect on the research process as a ‘workflow’ and how this might apply to their own work and data. Throughout the workshop, these tools will act as a framework for participants to reflect on how they use digital tools, how the research process itself contributes to analytical outcomes, and how this might fruitfully contribute to historical research and scholarship.

Workshop Plan:

    1. Introduction to the DHARPA project/group discussion on research methods, processes, and tools in digital history.
    2. Using kiara in Jupyter Notebook (introductory session)
    3. Parallel sessions using kiara in Jupyter Notebooks (Network Analysis)
    4. Understanding and building workflows, with closing discussions.

Die Pre-Conference-Workshops werden im Rahmen der diesjährigen Digital History-Tagung angeboten. Die Anmeldung zu den Workshops erfolgt zusammen mit der Tagungsanmeldung über ConfTool.
